Crazy Bones

Gogos Crazy Bones – A Playground Craze Or a Learning Aid?
I doubt there are many parents of primary school children who are not aware of the latest craze to be sweeping our playgrounds. In fact, such is the frenzy of excitement over the Gogos Crazy Bones toys that many schools have banned them from the premises on the grounds that they are too much of a distraction.
So what is it about these small characters that appeals to our children and why do we as adults not see the educational potential in them?
Children learn through play, whether it’s the social skills they acquire from interacting with their peers or the acquisition of knowledge from reading a book. It can sometimes be difficult for us to appreciate that children gain something from even the simplest toy. It’s not the toy itself that is important; it’s the way in which it is used that makes it educational. Furthermore, we as parents can greatly influence the benefits our children are getting by becoming involved in their games and suggesting ways to play that they might not have thought of.
The Crazy Bones characters are designed for children of three years and over, and the ways they can be used in an educational sense obviously depends on the age of the child. Younger children can be encouraged to sort them by colour, character or shape, or use them in counting games or story-telling.
For the older age range, the games are only limited by the child’s own imagination, which is rarely a problem. Many games are commonplace but all of them involve counting, adding up of points and a high degree of hand-eye coordination. Then there is the social aspect of collecting, swapping and negotiating, all necessary skills for the child to acquire.
The range of Gogos products is ever-expanding and now includes books and board games as well as albums for the Crazy Bones stickers, all of which have obvious educational benefits.
It’s totally understandable that some schools are against allowing items which may distract from the serious business of learning into the playground, but maybe they’re missing a trick here too. How much more willing would our children be to learn history if they could discover the origins of their most prized toy or learn to count with their favourite characters? One thing is for certain, banned or not, the Crazy Bones craze is going to be around for a while yet.
