One that is a prize to visit is the Wellington Cable Car Museum which tells the story of the country’s only remaining public cable car system. Visit the museum to catch up on the service’s colourful history, marvel at the machinery in the old winding room or climb aboard one of the old grip cars. The original winding house for the cable car system is now the home of the Wellington Cable Car Museum The Wellington Cable Car Museum is located in the historic Winding House at the upper terminus of the cable car in Upland Road. Visiting the museum is free and always fascinating for kids. During summer normally November 1 to Easter Monday the museum opens 9.30am – 5.30pm, daily. During the cold winter come any day between 10am – 5.00pm. Never come on Day as this is only the day the museum closes. The museum also welcomes School groups for educational tours and this must be booked with the museum manager reaching either the telephone +64 4 475 3578 or email: cablecar@wmt.org.nz The present Wellington Cable Car operates from the central city past the university and Kelburn Park to the top of the Botanic Gardens. You can begin exploring other destination by foot from the Botanic Gardens. The Cable Car operates between 7:00 am to 10:00 pm on Mondays to Fridays. Starting slightly late during Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays at 8:30 am to 10 pm. Imagine taking a scenic tour of the city for only $3.00 one way and $5.00 roundtrip. For your kids between 5 to 15 years old pay only $1.00 and $2.00 for one way and roundtrip respectively. You can find the lower terminus of the cable car at 280 Lambton Quay (next to McDonalds).
